About this role
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer to join our growing engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the full product lifecycle, from conceptualizing and designing mechanical systems to prototyping, testing, and scaling for production. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (including electrical engineers, software developers, and product managers) to deliver high-quality, reliable, and cost-effective mechanical solutions that meet our clients' and users' needs. Key Responsibilities Design & Development: Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and 2D production drawings for mechanical components and systems using industry-standard software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, Fusion 360). Analysis & Simulation: Perform Finite Element Analysis (FEA), Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), and thermal/stress analyses to validate designs before physical prototyping. Prototyping & Testing: Build, test, and troubleshoot physical prototypes. Design test fixtures and execute rigorous verification protocols to ensure safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance. Manufacturing Support: Collaborate with external manufacturing partners and vendors. Optimize designs for manufacturing and assembly (DFMA) to minimize production costs and lead times. Documentation: Generate and maintain comprehensive engineering documentation, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical specifications, user manuals, and engineering change notices (ECNs). Continuous Improvement: Evaluate existing products and systems to identify opportunities for cost reduction, performance optimization, and quality enhancements.
Qualifications and experience
Required Qualifications & Skills Education & Experience Degree: Bachelor’s degree (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. Experience: [X]+ years of professional experience in mechanical design or product development (level can be adapted for Junior, Mid, or Senior roles). Professional Registration: Candidate/Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) registration with [relevant local engineering council, e.g., ECSA in South Africa] is a plus but not strictly mandatory. Technical Competencies Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling tools (SolidWorks, Creo, or AutoCAD). Strong understanding of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) principles. Solid grasp of core engineering principles: mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, and materials science. Experience selecting materials (metals, plastics, composites) based on structural, thermal, and environmental requirements. Familiarity with various manufacturing processes (injection molding, CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing). Soft Skills Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities. Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. A collaborative mindset suited for fast-paced, cross-functional team environments.
