A South African engineering and energy-services company spanning energy projects, water projects and data analytics, requires a Business Development Project Engineer to join their Energy division who delivers energy-efficiency solutions to major mining, minerals processing and industrial clients, from project development and turnkey implementation through to performance management. ABOUT THE ROLE: This position is for an experienced and skilled Mechanical Engineer with sound Business Development expertise. The successful candidate will combine strong mechanical engineering experience with commercial and client-facing capabilities to identify energy-efficiency opportunities, develop technically and commercially viable solutions, build business cases and support the Company in converting opportunities into successful projects. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to secure new business. RESPONSIBILITIES: Identify and develop new business opportunities within the mining, minerals processing and industrial sectors. Build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective clients, Engage with clients to understand operational challenges, energy consumption profiles and improvement opportunities. Translate client requirements and operational challenges into technically and commercially viable project concepts. Develop proposals, technical solutions, preliminary designs, cost estimates and business cases for prospective projects. Lead or support client presentations and technical/commercial discussions. Work with technical specialists to develop custom solutions. Support the negotiation and commercialisation of opportunities through to project award. Maintain an active pipeline of opportunities and provide regular updates on business-development activities. Identify opportunities for expanding services with existing clients. Lead and manage project teams, including engineers, technicians, and contractors, to ensure effective project development and resource utilization. Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior team members to foster professional growth and development. Foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment. Establish and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, vendors, and regulatory authorities involved in mining and industrial projects. Actively engage with stakeholders to understand project requirements, address concerns, and ensure their satisfaction throughout the project development lifecycle. Conduct regular stakeholder meetings, presentations, and progress reviews to ensure alignment and effective communication. The employee may be required to perform other duties as assigned by management. REQUIREMENTS: The ideal candidate is a commercially minded Mechanical Engineer who enjoys working directly with clients and solving complex industrial problems. Should be equally comfortable discussing technical solutions with other engineers, understanding operational challenges with plant personnel and presenting project business cases to senior management. Essential: BEng/BSc/Bachelor degree in Mechanical Engineering 5+ years' relevant post-graduation experience Minimum 3-5+ years of experience in Business Development in the mining or industrial sector Proven mechanical engineering/project development experience Demonstrated client relationship management experience Proven ability to identify and develop engineering opportunities Strong communication and presentation skills Project management experience Ability to work independently and lead teams Strong commercial and problem-solving capability Highly Recommended: Knowledge in mining, minerals processing or heavy industry. Experience with energy-efficiency projects. Experience with energy audits and feasibility studies. Experience with performance-based/project-financed energy projects. Strong understanding of mechanical systems and industrial equipment, with experience in energy-intensive systems such as compressors, pumps, refrigeration systems, fans, crushers, conveyors and cooling systems.
