About this role
Intermediate Automation Engineer – Drive Real Impact with AI Step into a role where engineering meets business transformation. As an Intermediate Automation Engineer, you’ll partner directly with business teams to uncover inefficiencies, design smarter workflows, and deliver automation solutions that change the way work gets done. From discovery to deployment, you’ll own the journey end‑to‑end building solutions on an in‑house AI platform and ensuring they’re adopted where they matter most. This is a chance to combine technical expertise with business engagement, operating independently while shaping the future of intelligent automation. Key Responsibilities: Engage independently with business departments (Sales, HR, Finance, Technical Support, Production, Marketing) to map processes, identify inefficiencies, and maintain a pipeline of automation opportunities. Translate business process problems into technical solutions with scope, risk, and benefit assessments. Design, build, deploy, and maintain automation agents and workflows end-to-end. Build and maintain components of the internal AI platform (model gateway, agent runtimes, retrieval services, integrations, user access). Extend shared platform capabilities to reduce cost of new automations. Implement governance mechanisms (authorisation rules, budgets, guardrails, audit logging). Own operational health of platform components (monitoring, capacity, cost, incident response, root cause analysis). Ensure compliance with data classification, privacy, and security requirements. Define and maintain evaluation/regression suites to measure solution quality. Run adoption activities (training, demos, documentation, post-deployment reviews). Contribute to technical direction by evaluating models, tools, and approaches. Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge through reviews and training. Maintain clear technical documentation (platform architecture, agent designs, integrations). Facilitate communication between technical and non-technical stakeholders. Job Experience and Skills Required: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software/Computer/Electronic Engineering, Information Systems, or related field. 3–5 years’ experience in software development, automation, or data engineering with production delivery. Practical experience building AI/LLM-based applications (retrieval-augmented generation, agent workflows, automation pipelines). Proficiency in Python plus one typed language (Java, TypeScript, C#, etc.). Experience integrating with enterprise systems (ERP, CRM, ticketing, document management) via APIs. Working knowledge of containerisation, version control, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring. Familiarity with Agile, Scrum, and DevOps practices. Demonstrated ability to engage non-technical stakeholders and deliver adopted solutions. Exposure to Linux, containerisation, cloud or on-prem infrastructure. Strong understanding of data protection, access control, and information security (including POPIA). Relevant certifications in AI/ML, cloud platforms, or software development are advantageous.
